Back for the New Year: 2011

Welcome all followers to another upcoming indoor season for the Hawks.  As we had a long month off to have great quality family time, we also left 2010 in great shape and confidence for the upcoming season.  2011 is deemed our year because we want it to be.  We know as a team, the amount of work we put into this season, will  be the same amount we get back in the end.  Everyone wants to do great and be better than last year.  Only the performances will tell.

The first meet back from this break was at the Wesleyan Invite at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.  Faced with competition from in-state foes as well as out of state runners, it was a great way to start this year and to see where we are at as a team.  Leaving at 8am from the school is nothing new and is no where compared to waking up for practice at 6am every morning. Only a half an hour drive away from the school we show up at the track ready to go.  First event on the track was the Men's 5,000m run.  Leading the way was Senior Jonas Hampton and Junior Andy Chalmers.  Both leading the way through the whole race, both runners started to pull away from the pack.  In the result of this long race, Andy Chalmers came out in front with a time of 15:32.14 and Jonas Hampton came in second in a time of 15:46.12.  With this momentum throughout the meet, the Hawks continued to find success after success in every event through the meet.

The sprints on both sides of the team were very strong and had a great showing.  Junior Anderson Emerole went on to win the 400m and the 200m in times of 49.93 and 22.48 respectively.  Also having a strong showing was Senior Warren Lane.  Lane finishing 2nd behind teammate Emerole in the 400m with a time of 50.38 and placing 3rd in the 200 with a time of 22.93.  The two were joined by Senior Chris Carr and Freshman Jared Casey for a 3rd place 4x400m relay, who went on to run 3:26 at the meet. Junior Chris Rodriguez went on to run the 600 for the Hawks with a time of 1:26.42, which is now a new school record.  Wayne Lawrence went on to run 1:27.94 and had the school record, but for only a few mins until Chris came onto the track the very next heat and broke it.  Wayne was still gracious and happy for the way he ran and congratulated Chris for his run as well.  Teammates don't battle, we always help each other out.  For the girls, Sophomore Priscilla Appiagyei tore up the track in the 200 and the 400 as well, running 26.96 and 1:00.17.  Junior Kenterra Richardson and Freshman Grace Lawal tore up the track in the 55m dash, making it back to the finals and running 7.67 abd 7.69 respectively in the event.  Senior Marisa Poleto ran the 600m in school record breaking fashion, completing the grueling 3 lap run in a time of 1:41.68. Appiagyei was joined by Natalie Bonham, Rebecca Cheatham, and Lawal to run the 4x400m relay in a time of 4:13.20.

Another strong component to the Hawks team is the field events and the competitors we have on the team.  A strong built team that goes for the glory and soars the sky towards sand pits, vaulting their bodies up great heights, and heaving weights and shot puts only for first place finishes.  On the men's side, Freshman Rashawn Providence and Sophomore CJ Douglas both did well in the triple jump.  Providence jumped 13.17 meters while Douglas jumped 12.98.  Freshman Peter Swota, had a strong showing the pole vault.  Vaulting a height of 3.65 meters in the event.  On the women's side there were two first place finishes.  One coming from Freshman Alisha Beeman in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.58 meters.  In the long jump, Junior Nicolle Adams won the event in a jump of 5.06.  Freshman Rebecca Cheatham placed second in the event with a jump of 4.93.  In the pole vault, Junior Caitlyn Hauswirth vaulted a height of 2.75 meteres good for 7th place.

Next week Friday the Hawks continue their 2011 Indoor Season in Boston, Ma at the Reggie Lewis Center for the Collegiate Reebok Games.  Be there and come see the Scarlet and White run and throw and jump.
